PEER PROJECT: implemented by the UNDP with GEF funding


The regional training component, “Training Trainers in Energy Efficiency,” will be held within the framework of BUN-CA’s Regional Energy Efficiency Project (PEER) with the support of the Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá (UTP).   The training is designed for Central American university professors in the technical areas of electricity, mechanics, chemistry and electromechanics, and will enable professors to specialize in electrical energy efficiency through the sharing of experiences, talks by international experts and technical visits.

 The training will be held February 26-28 and March 1-2, 2007, at the Hotel Crowne Plaza.



Within the framework of BUN-CA’s Regional Energy Efficiency Project (PEER), an introductory workshop will be held for the Sector Committee on Electrical Engineering Standardization on "The Need for Technical Standardization in the Electricity Sector.”  Participating in the event will be the Vice Minister of Industry and Commerce (MICI), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), BUN-CA and Mr. Odón de Buen, Mexican expert on standardization.

The workshop will be held at 2:00 p.m. on February 26, 2007, at the Hotel Bristol.

BUN-CA signed an institutional cooperation agreement with the Nicaraguan Chamber of Industries


On February 16, 2007, BUN-CA signed an institutional cooperation agreement with the Nicaraguan Chamber of Industries, the object of which is to identify opportunities and share information on energy efficiency projects being carried out by both institutions, specifically with respect to the end use of electricity in the industrial and commercial sectors.

"Electrical Installations" Workshop

Within the framework of the PEEST project, BUN-CA will be giving in March 2007 a workshop on electrical installations in La Fortuna, Costa Rica for the purpose of training hotelkeepers and maintenance supervisors on safety measures for electrical installations and how to interpret electricity bills.

 Bi-National Energy Efficiency Project for the Tourism Sector in Costa Rica and Nicaragua (PEEST III)

In January 2007 BUN-CA started activities for the Costa Rica/Nicaragua Bi-National Energy Efficiency Project for the Tourism Sector, the overall goal of which is to “strengthen a market transformation for energy efficiency programs in hotels on Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast and reapply the knowledge acquired on Nicaragua's southern Pacific coast,” with the co-financial support of the Humanistic Institute for Development Cooperation (HIVOS).




BUN-CA opened an office in Nicaragua on February 8, 2007, located one block north and 75 yards east of Distribuidora Vicky, house no. 158, open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

In charge of this office are Lizeth Zúniga, Country Representative, and Betzabeth Granera, mechanical engineer.




Last February 20th, BUN-CA imparted a presentation about Industrial and Commerce Energy Efficiency  Regional Program, which was organized for Nicaragua Industrial Chamber (Cámara de Industrias de Nicaragua, CADIN)

The assistance, 30 representatives for Industrial and Commerce sector were very interesting in the energy efficiency in order to improve the competition and the profitability. of their industries. Also they will have industrial process more friendly with environmental reducing the electricity demand.



BUN-CA will be participating in the 2007 Third Energy Fair: Energy for the Future, organized by the Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz, S.A.  through the Centro de Enseñanza Permanente de Conservación de Energía (CEPCE).  The aim is to inform of new technologies for energy efficiency and alternative sources of energy generation in the commercial, industrial, residential and technical and university education sectors.

The fair will take place in the Plantel Virilla gymnasium located 200 meters east of the Pozuelo plant in La Uruca, from 10:00 a.m. to 7 p.m.

BUN-CA participated with a talk on energy efficiency at the Ninth Regional Forum on Financial Opportunities for Renewable Energy Projects in Central America, organized by the Energy and Environment Partnership with Central America (AEA) for the purpose of helping renewable energy developers make contact with financial institutions.  The forum was held February 19-21, 2007, in Guatemala City.
